New York-based indie-pop artist Cade Hoppe introduces the music video, “Borrowed Time,” a track lifted from his recently released EP, Tell Me How It’s Worth It.
Cade explains the song, sharing, “‘Borrowed Time’ is a song about the period after a relationship has run its course, but you still can’t bring yourself to leave. When you’re in that position, you feel a million feelings all at once and it’s paralyzing; and when you’re feeling a million different feelings while saying the same words over and over, it’s tough to convey that to the listener completely. My goal in making this video was to help give another dimension to the lyrics I wrote because this feeling is definitely the most complex on the EP.”
On Tell Me How It’s Worth It, Cade’s lush baritone explores topics of love, loss, transition, and desire.
Talking about the EP, Cade says, “At its core, ‘Tell Me How It’s Worth It’ is about leaving behind what’s no longer good for you in order to find what is. Each of the five songs play a different role in that process and an important thing to note is that the story isn’t exactly linear, because, in my experience, the process of leaving someone or something for the greener grass is always messy. Each song came together a little bit differently—there are songs that were written right in the heat of a feeling while there are others that are written with a little more perspective after the fact. Ultimately, this group of songs made the most sense because they perfectly describe a heavy period of transition in my life.”
“Borrowed Time” opens on low-slung layers of lo-fi indie-pop colors, at once dark and luminous. A thumping kick-drum drives the rhythm, along with a fat bassline. Cade’s delicious baritone imbues the lyrics with hints of melancholy and nostalgia.
On the chorus, the harmonics and Cade’s voice assume distorted timbres, suffusing the tune with a feeling of emotional susceptibility.
Oh, so expressive, “Borrowed Time” allows Cade Hoppe to strut his deluxe baritone voice and his superb songwriting ability. This is an artist to keep tabs on.
