The new film trailer is out for the upcoming (on 11/11/11) Adam Sandler film, Jack and Jill, which also noticeably features the one and only Katie “Face of the Future” Holmes. This movie, much like the Guillermo Del Toro produced Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, was strategically chosen by the Holmes camp (read: Tom Cruise) to “diversify” the resumé; that is, Holmes has subjected herself to a token-wife role (not unlike her role in real life) just to prove that she can “do” comedy. You know, unlike what she does each and every day, or something like that. Anyway, here’s the aforementioned trailer:
Kaiser thinks that Katie is totally “phoning it in” here, and I tend to agree. However, I would like to emphasize it’s not merely a case of Katie reverting to autopilot as an actor but also to her default persona in real life. Like, if you witnessed Katie sheepishly shrugging with a good-natured, “Oh, Tom!” when her husband waltzed into the room in drag, you wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest bit, right? In that sense, this is the role of a lifetime for Mrs. Cruise. Never mind Nicole Kidman and her Oscar. This, in comparison, is gold or, at least, the same brand of gold-plated nonsense that coats the Celebrity Scientology Centre.
Beyond the obvious jokes though, isn’t it rather obvious that even Adam Sandler is reaching pretty far with this movie? It’s almost as if one of his agents couldn’t come up with anything even remotely mindless that he hadn’t performed on film already, so his screenwriter buddy thought, “Hey, let’s put him in drag!” To which Adam’s agent replied, “Genius!” And then Katie exclaimed, “Aw, shucks!”
