Voight’s CI came through for his unit. Anna has gained Escano’s trust. Escano was the leader of the Los Temidos gang and she wanted revenge against them for having raped her to initiate her into the gang. But taking down Escano or his crew was a lot harder than they first believed. It had taken months of undercover work. Anna had to work at Escano’s bakery. She had to slowly win his trust. It left her vulnerable. It left her kid vulnerable. The only reason she continued the job was that Voight promised to protect her and a cop’s word was worth more than Escano could ever give her. Escano asked Anna to meet with him at a house in the suburbs.
This was unusual for Anna. She mostly made trips for him within the city. She, therefore, alerted Voight. He and his team followed her as she made that meeting with Escano. They overheard Escano saying he trusts her. Which was a lot for him. He doesn’t trust most people. He was very paranoid and yet he told her about a shipment coming. He also asked Anna to memorize the plates of this shipment. She did so. She also passed it on to Voight. His unit looked up that shipment. It crossed over from Mexico a few days ago and it was being used by three cartels. And Voight’s people were also keeping a close eye on Matteo.
Matteo was the man who gave Escano the ride to the house. Escano didn’t just appear out of nowhere. He gets driven to places and the person he chooses as his driver was potentially someone really close to the action. After Voight’s unit identified Matteo, they sat on him. They watched him go to a party. All they heard was the music until suddenly they heard screams. Detective Upton chose to follow the screams. It led her to the party that Matteo was attending. It turns out Matteo was gang-raping a girl there. They were also filming it all. Upton and Halstead arrested two out of the three men involved. And they called in Voight because they didn’t know if it was just rape or a gang initiation.
Either way, the girl involved was a victim. Her name is Isobel. She came because Matteo told her that it was going to be a party and he failed to mention how it was going to be a rape party. They roofied the girl. They put her in handcuffs. Then started to film as they raped her. Voight later questioned the ring leader. Which happened to be Matteo. Matteo said that rape was Escano’s idea. He said he had to record it because that’s how Escano gets dirt on people. He uses initiations as a way of getting dirt on his people. And Isobel meanwhile hadn’t even wanted to join a gang. She was a good kid with no record and that’s how she wanted to remain.
Matteo and at least one partner in crime were arrested. Matteo tried to claim the party was Isobel’s idea. They told him to shut up because the video proves that none of this was Isobel’s idea and so that’s when they told Matteo about the charges he’s looking at. He could go away for a long time with everything he did and so unless he wanted to take crowded showers – he had to talk. Matteo said that the party was Escano’s idea. He said that Escano likes to watch. He also said that Escano wanted dirt on everyone in his employ. Voight knew this because Escano approached him to work for him.
Escano had heard that Voight was a dirty cop. He, therefore, made a bribe. He gave Voight a bunch of money in a bag and Voight took it back to his station where they reported money as an attempted bribe. Voight also met with Anna. He didn’t tell her about the rapes because he thought it would make her lose focus. But hiding it wasn’t a good idea either. Voight just told Anna that Matteo got picked up for stealing cars. Anna then walked around with that until she talked to Escano. Escano admitted that Matteo got picked up because some girl got hurt. And Anna was able to piece together what really happened.
Anna was left furious. She wanted justice for her rape. She wanted justice for Isobel’s rape. Anna confronted Voight and he told her that he lied to keep her focus. Anna said she was already focused. She also asked if Escano had anything to do with her rape. Voight couldn’t answer that question and so that was an answer in itself. Anna wanted to get Escano. She wanted more than anything and that’s why she refuses to break cover when she noticed someone tailing her. Anna was about to drop off a shipment. So, she didn’t care who saw. She was going to keep going until she got Escano on the hook for this.
But something else happened first. Voight deployed his unit to arrest everybody and no sooner did Upton and Halstead were about to do so that an explosion occurred from one of the trucks. It knocked out the two detectives. And the bad guy got away.
